ISSUE 4: Cinematography Today
The editorial board of Cinematography in Progress is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of Issue 4, continuing the journal’s commitment to advancing research, critical discourse, and practice-based inquiry in the field of cinematography.
Cinematography in Progress is an international double-blind peer-reviewed, open-access journal dedicated specifically to cinematography and its evolving practices, aesthetics, technologies, and methods of research. It provides a platform for cinematographers, researchers, educators, and practitioners to share new knowledge and to strengthen the dialogue between professional practice and academic research.
Issue 4 builds on the presentations and discussions of the recent Visual Media Lab - Reality Check/2025 and The Cinematography of Today/2026 conferences and invites conference speakers to develop their presentations into scholarly papers. The issue reflects the diversity of contemporary cinematography research, including theoretical and historical perspectives, technological developments, creative and collaborative practices, cinematographic aesthetics, education, and practice-based and artistic research.
The journal emerged from an international collaboration between cinematographers, educators, and researchers and from a series of conferences dedicated to the teaching and research of cinematography. From its beginnings as a platform for publishing and extending these conference discussions, Cinematography in Progress has developed into an international forum for exploring cinematography as both a creative practice and a field of scholarly inquiry.
With Issue 4, we aim to continue this dialogue and bring together different perspectives on how cinematography is being practised, researched, taught, and transformed today.
